How Platelets are Formed, Platelets Low Causes

Platelets are tiny cells that circulate in the blood and whose role is to participate in the clotting process. Inside each platelet are many granules that contain compounds that enhance the ability of platelets to adhere to each other and also to the surface of a damaged blood vessel wall.

Platelet Formation Fragmentation of bone marrow cells known as megakaryocytes produces platelets. Each megakaryocyte cell produces 5,000 to 10,000 platelets. Platelet have a lifespan of 5 to 9 days, and a normal human adult produces 1×1011 platelet every day. Additional or reserve platelet are stored in the spleen and released at the time of need. Phagocytes and Kupffer cells destroy old platelet, giving new ones the opportunity to take their place.

Platelet function: Platelet are small cells that circulate in the blood and whose function is to participate in the coagulation process.
